What is Synthetic Motor Oil?

Synthetic motor oil was designed to be a more cost-effective lubricant for engines that would reduce the amount of friction caused by shifting loads during driving. Thus, it was hoped that by using synthetic oils, the engine will have a longer and more reliable life span, not to mention a lower fuel economy. This, in turn, will benefit the consumer as well as the environment.

There are two main properties that make up synthetic oil, the molecular size and the level of porosity. With the molecular size, this type of lubricant has a larger number of surface structures or crystallites. These crystallites are made of multiple molecules, or atoms, which are much too small to be seen by the naked eye. They are bonded together with molecular bonds that are strong enough to withstand the stresses that an engine is exposed to on a regular basis. In this way, friction is prevented and the engine lasts longer. The lower molecular weight ensures a steady supply of fuel throughout the life of the vehicle.

On the other hand, with the second property, oil with a lower molecular weight can also provide good lubrication and the amount of friction is not nearly as great as with pure crude oil. This allows for a less amount of lubrication to be required to keep an engine running smoothly. This translates to significant cost savings to the driver, which will continue to happen during the lifetime of the vehicle. Oils with a lower molecular weight tend to be less expensive to manufacture and refine than those with a higher weight. In turn, this allows refiners to produce a greater volume of refined lubricants at a lower cost, making synthetic oil an economical choice in the long run.

There are many benefits to choosing synthetic oil specifications over conventional motor oil. For one thing, these oils are cleaner and greener. It also contains no petroleum by-products, which means that it won't contribute to a buildup of pollution inside your vehicle. Furthermore, synthetic motor oil products work extremely well with almost any type of engine, whether it is an internal combustion engine an electric engine, or even an electric vehicle. They even work great with water-powered vehicles.
