The Penny Test
We get it. Life can be busy and the last thing you want to worry about is the maintenance of your car. But for the sake of your safety and others on the road, it's important to check in from time to time on how your car is doing. One of the most essential components to that is tire condition. In our previous blog post, we discussed tire replacement depending on age and tread depth. Today, we are digging a little bit deeper to show you an easy way to check your tire tread depth by yourself. So, stay tuned and save yourself some time before visiting your closest mechanic shop, with the Penny Test!
The Penny Test is just as simple as it sounds, all you need is a Penny, access to your car tires, and you are good to go! Now, all you have to do is insert the coin with Lincoln’s head facing downwards to the tire tread and see how deep it goes. If you can see the entire head, your tread is less than 2/32 inch, meaning your tires should be replaced as soon as possible.
If Your Tire Tread is...
- 4/32” or deeper: Your tire tread is still in good condition
- 3/32”: You should replace your tires soon
- 2/32” or less: Replace your tires now
Bonus Tip!
If you don’t have any change on you, no problem! Nowadays, most tire brands have tread bar indicators to help you check the tread depth more easily. These bars are molded into the bottom of most tread grooves and indicate the U.S. Department of Transportation 2/32-inch threshold.
