A BMW Baseline Maintenance Schedule:

  • Engine Inspections: every 20,000 miles
  • Oil Changes: every 5000 miles
  • Brake Fluid: every 30,000 miles
  • Spark Plugs: BMW has different recommended intervals based on the type of engine
  • Timing Belts & Chains: every 80,000 - 90,000 miles most BMWs need a replacement
  • Coolant Replacement: every 40,000 miles

Engine Inspections:

Future Auto Service recommends a full engine inspection every 20,000 miles. Such an inspection includes checking any engine components for possible leaks and wear which can be more complex than a normal visual check-up. Here at FAS, our ASE certified technicians are capable of carefully conducting a proper inspection on your BMW. Click here to schedule an appointment!

Oil Changes:

Since BMW’s engines are performance & economy oriented, the manufacturer is using enhanced oil distribution methods such as the VANOS system to maximize the efficiency of your engine. When the oil change schedule isn’t followed correctly, it is likely your engine could burn oil or get problems with its crankcase pressure system.

Brake Fluid:

Keep yourself and others safe on the road by flushing and changing your brake fluid every 30,000 miles. If you have a M-BMW or use your car on the track, excessive heat and pressure will require a shorter brake fluid interval.

Spark Plugs:

Spark Plugs are essential for any combustion engine. Continuously lighting the mix of gasoline and air inside the cylinders, makes them subject to excessive forces causing foul or wear over time. While the intervals for changing spark plugs are specific to your BMW’s engine, servicing them is crucial to avoid misfiring. Check your owner’s manual for the correct interval or call Future Auto Service at 818-239-7201 for further assistance.

Timing Belts & Chains:

One of the most critical services for your BMW, is the timing belt replacement. While most BMW engines are lasting about 80,000 - 90,000 miles before requiring a change, watch out for engine codes, clicking noises, or rough idle. These symptoms might be an indicator for a timing belt change. Overall, it is crucial to perform the service in a timely manner to avoid serious engine damage through a broken belt.

Coolant Replacement:

The last thing you want to happen to your BMW is engine overheating. Therefore, make sure your thermostat, radiator, hoses, and heater core are working properly. Whenever replacing one of these components, Future Auto service recommends changing the coolant as well. Other than that, every 40,000 is a proper interval for a coolant replacement. If you are unsure about the condition of your cooling system, you can always reach out to Future Auto Service for a consultation.

Be Aware of Other Service Needs

While these are the most important BMW maintenance aspects, you should always be expecting some other necessary service to your car depending on your usage. Tires, brakes & suspension are just a few examples. Sounds a bit overwhelming? Don’t worry!
